Acropolis Now

ok, first things first. The city on the hill=Acropolis.  It’s the whole enchilada and is comprised of the Parthenon, a couple other temples with long names and the Temple of Athena Nike. All are on the hill and were built approx 450BC.  for those not in the know the city has been occupied by the Romans, Persians and so on over the millennia and this site has been a Christian church and a mosque. It was cleaned up and restored to its original status starting in the 1800’s. More work goes on today as so,e of the prior restoration work was lacking in our current technology and is breaking down. One of the really amazing things was seeing how they are rebuilding the columns with the pieces from the past that they have and new marble. It’s all neatly patchworked together and helps even more to recreate the setting.
We hoofed it up around and back down before working out way over to the National Archeological Museum  today.  All in all we walked 18,500 steps today or 7.6 miles.
Eating dinner tonight in our hotel’s rooftop restaurant I again marveled at the mere fact of these monuments these testaments to Western Civilization and am amazed at the idea of just seeing this in your window every day. It boggles the mind.

I will post a bunch of pics. I can’t enlarge them as I would like and don’t know if it is due to the iPad or the internet or the blog site. Seems like you could click on a given pic and it will enlarge.
