We are at the beach but this is about Delphi

well the fabulous Maria, our guide, keeps us busy and unless we want to sacrifice sleep (unwise) we haven’t had much time for posting!   today is a free day for those who want to go to the beach, which seems unwise as we are having a prediction of thunderstorms this afternoon. And to give our hardworking and excellent driver a mandatory day off.   We call Maria the Captain. She is a Brit married to a Greek and is thus fluent in both la gauges and culture.
But this is about Delphi.  Lesson one: we’ve been pronouncing it wrong. Del-fee, not Del-fie.  Lesson two: this was an even older site of worship of Gaia probably due to the vaporous emissions from the earth that are hallucinogenic in small doses and lethal in large.  The ancient Greeks co-opted the site. Who says Christians are the only ones?  They had a prophetess who then spoke for Apollo and was interpreted by prophets for the questioners who came. Answers open to interpretation.  Lesson 3: the entire site is called the Oracle.   And people would come from all over, often sailing up the Sea of Corinth and coming up The Valley.
As is often the case it was covered by a village and lost until the 1800's.
The whole bit is on a steep hillside with the stadium for sports even higher up.  Very atmospheric and cool.
