Another Roadside Attraction

My second attempt at this post because of internet capriciousness. Final installment from Swakopmund where the desert meets the sea. Our lodgings were these amazing rooms on stilts connected by walkways (kind of Swiss Family Robinson style with amazing views of the river estuary (except of course the river is dry. Marshes are there and the water that has remained keeps the flamingos and some herons busy.

On our trip to the seal colony we traveled along the Skeleton Coast, where ships have wrecked in great number. This leaves some wrecks on the shore but not as many as you might think due to the effects of salt water and sand.

The lineup of rickety stands at the roadside with these amazing salt crystals dug up by locals and for sale on the honor system with a locked and rusty box was another surprise: the crystals are the size of melons and intricate until the damp air starts to degrade them. Humidity was 93% here, in contrast to the rest of the country.

And when Jim and I scampered up a hill to retrieve a geocache we found these cool rocks with water carved out holes (I’m guessing) all covered with the most beautiful lichens.

And now we are in the Erongo mountains in the south of Damaraland. More later. Order of photos is wonky but don’t want to struggle more with the inter webs.
