Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Words are hard to convey our experience of Etosha. There is a huge salt pan which, for a few months out of the year, has a thin layer of water and the grasses are green much of the year it is dry and flat and gives mirages of water with eerie vistas shimmering in the heat. That alone is stunning. The animals. Herds and herds of springboks (renamed by us as bokaboks) mountain and plains zebras, gnus (hartebeests), oryx (gemsbok), the endangered black faced impala, plus more so much more. The herds are plentiful and immense. There are tons of birds too. We spent the day driving slowly and ogling the herds.

Highlights of yesterday and today in addition to sanguine.y say oh... another herd of springboks! Oh! More red hartebeests! And marveling at our blasè impressions. No the highlight was several herds of elephants, white and black rhinos!!! We never expected to see the rhinos. And to see both was astounding. I will post birds as separate post to not overwhelm the photo feed...oh and it’s hhhhhooottttt. Mid 90’s today. Our bush camp (sounds more rustic than it is) comes with luxurious mosquito netting and more.

And now we sit at the waterhole drinking beer and something has just startled the birds and the impalas. Desperately hoping it’s a lion!!!
