So there was a big earthquake on Sicily in 1693. It was maybe more centered on the eastern side. Anyway this is significant as it was devastating and destroyed cities and they had to rebuild. Why build an old and out of fashion Romanesque church or city hall when you can do a fancy ‘modern’ place with all the gussied up styling of the time? One great example of this is the island of Ortiga which is now the old town of Siracusa. One of the main things that came out of this was a profusion of fancy footings of balconies and this is where you hung out heckling the commoners. Or something. And all are examples of what is called Sicilian Baroque as this part of the world even though it was the ultra modern age of 1693, was not quite ready to shift to that Renaissance style.
