Well we made it to Heathrow, off the plane and through security and to the exit in 30 minutes, amazing if you count how big that place is. And we made it to Luton where we are staying next to the airport since we need to be there at 4:30. After a mishap with renting a car from a vendor who, to my mind, stiffed us, we were able to rent a car and take off.
Car positions: driver, on the RIGHT side, was yours truly. Chief navigator was Bryce and Chief white knuckler was Karen. We were in a Citroen, about the size of a small SUV. But rather WIDE. Let us say it felt edematous. With Bryce cueing me, we didn’t even have issues with the left side of the road. Once we got lunch out of the way, we determined that traveling on the big roads was no fun, and what we wanted was bucolic little dorfs and birds in the hedgerows. Bryce figured out how to route us on Uber-country roads and off we went.
That was when we figured out that the locals drive like a bat outta hell on one lane roads with no shoulder. And oh, this was a manual transmission, and for those who one know, the gears are the same but since you are on the opposite side of them it’s a bit of a relearning process to make your brain and arm do the work. Suffice it to say, I would somehow shift from 2nd back to 1st instead of 3rd gear which caused some lurching once in a while. That plus the exclamations when the crazy drivers in the opposite direction literally made me suck in my breath to help the car feel thinner, it was a riot. We were laughing so hard that I had trouble seeing.
But we found some birds, amusing signs road signs and old timbered buildings. And just wondering about that Defibrillator: do you have to pay shillings to be able to use it?
All in all a good day. We are propping our eyes open, but doing fine. And this was a great way to spend the day even though it was in the upper 30’s. Brrr. Can’t wait for warmer climes down south.
