Seeing a ton of cool geology. That’s partly what happens when you travel with a subject matter expert. Plus the earthcaches that need to be logged by yours truly.
But Jim is napping and we wanted to give you a compendium of what we have seen so far. You can be sure he has vetted all of this.
This enormous rock was supposedly split by ice, but it’s warm here. So we are inclined to believe this is related to the hand of Ruaumoko, the Māori god of earthquakes and volcanos. Must have been angry at the time.
Jim was speaking about uplift and things, but these are more in line with the Cliffs of Insanity (if you have watched Princess Bride, you know)
The locals call these Pancake Rocks, but Jim objects to this description and so do we: it’s Crepe Rocks!
There are shells in this lumpy rock that supposedly fell from the cliffs above. Perhaps. Or perhaps it emerged from underground like a big wart.
This geothermal pool has a spurting steam vent, but we are pretty sure it’s was transplanted from Yellowstone by Disney
Jim says that these are gneiss, and are related to glacial runoff, but we liked the term circle circle things
This is another image of Crepe Rocks. See the comparison below?
This was at Cape Kidnappers and I’m sure Jim has an explanation but we know it’s fossilized shark fin
This is from the Metro Cave, and there is some comment he might make about drapery but we know a fossilized beard when we see one
Hilarious!
