If I was to be abducted, I do not think the worst place to wake up would be Cape Kidnappers. Named by Captain Cook, we spent the day in true pirate fashion.
After a delicious brekkie we headed off into the surrounding area to drink and be merry aka local wine tasting.
Next came the main event: The gannet colony. We piled onto a manual transmission bus which proceeded to rocket up steep dusty hills heading over to the cape. The bus consisted of Karen clenching and staring at the ground willing it to be over, me being jealous that all the cool stuff was on their side of the bus, and a man with a very thick accent telling us things over the intercom. Despite this we made it up the hill. Past many a sheep and cow, and cool bird that I didn’t see because they were on the other side of the bus, and a glorious view. We made it. And were faced with every pirates dream; a sea of gold and silver.
Now sure this was the gold and silver of adult and juvenile gannet heads but was still impressive. There was a massive sea of them all flying around and clicking their beaks. When gannets land on the ground there’s about a 3 second pause where you’re waiting for one of two things to happen, either they are about to start screaming and fighting or they’re about to rub their heads together in a sweet display of recognition. Interspersed within the gannets were several silver gulls attempting to steal food and cause general mischief. With the wind whipping around us we stood and surveyed our treasure.
We returned home and dined on wine, crackers, and a bit of kiwi fruit to help ward off scurvy. As I was writing this, the sweet golden retriever that is at our AirBnb with us popped up by the sliding glass door, toy monkey in mouth, and distracted all of us from everything we were doing. We are now off to sleep in our bunks.
Pictures to follow. More will be on my instagram @jademoonrabbit đź’•
