This was another day of transitions, off the west coast beaches (and their murderous black flies) inland, to a series of glacial lakes. Imagine Lake Chelan, and change some of the trees and shrubbery and you have it about right. Except there are 2 side by side lakes. No matter. We are now ensconced at Lake Wanaka, in our lovely homestead. In town. Also no matter. We are going to grill tonight and there is a hot tub!
Quite close to our abode is a tree in the water. Which HAS IT’S OWN WEBSITE, and is an Instagram sensation. Go ahead, take a moment to either google ‘thatwanakatree’ or #thatwanakatree and see what you can see. Evidently, the website says that 70 years ago this was a willow fence post and clearly the lake water fluctuates as the images online show a tree submerged an today the tourists that beat us to this icon were able to pose right next to it without wading.
But Karen and I are strategic and besides, all those tourists have the town in the background and we have the lovely hillside and a REFLECTION. That has to count for something.
And the real irony is that, just uphill from this tree are a series of ENORMOUS trees in the park, one of which is a Sierra Cedar, which I am guessing 150 years old, Karen says 1000. I think they were imported but my phone is misbehaving.
Karen is standing at the base of the cedar. You can try a “where’s Waldo” exercise and see if you can see her.
Perhaps that is the real find here. You decide.
Karen’s head is obscuring the next person tottering out there
