This is at least partly for my wound clinic peeps. No it’s not a paid endorsement!
Honey, let’s talk about it. Some of you may have heard about Manuka honey. Down here it’s the bees knees (hahahahabahabaha). But not all honey is created equal. Not all MANUKA honey is created equal. We wound care folks use medical grade honey for wound healing and know of its benefits. It is good wound goop, and is bacteriostatic.
But it’s so much more than that. Manuka refers to a tree from the tea tree family. It has something called leptospermum and the percentage of this is measured in 2 ways: UMF and MGO. If Google is to be believed the higher the values of MGO the better the properties: improved antibacterial, antiviral and anti inflammatory properties. Helps in digestive health, improves wrinkles and makes your bug bites itch less. I could go on.
(Which is good because on the South Island west coast are some legendary black flies that don’t just bite they tear your skin….we have not encountered them as we just got to the South Island. Stay tuned )
We went to a store in Hawke’s Bay that was all about honey, they have hives, a honey tasting bar and more beauty and health products than you can imagine. But what I really recall was Wayne, our driver out to the Cape Kidnapper gannet colony. Friendly and affable older man with a Kiwi accent so thick you can slice it. He takes a spoonful of high MGO (over 100) every morning in his tea and says he hasn’t been sick in 29 years. That’s got to count for something. So I put some on my toast this morning.
Very interesting!!
