On the way out of town this morning we made a stop in Loccom, and little dot on the Lower Saxony map whose claim to fame (at least in part) is the Cistercian abbey which was established in 1163. Took some time but it was concerted to Lutheranism 1600 and is still in operation as a seminary today. It is considered the best preserved Cistercian abbey in Germany.
Mom does love a good Cistercian abbey. This one has an altar dedicated to St Birgitta, which is certainly auspicious. She was an opinionated one. Also auspicious. The out buildings are great versions of Fachwerk, but one of the really remarkable items was in the cloister itself which clearly indicated that it was built in a more northern climate (windows to protect from the elements, it can get well below freezing there in the winter) and the angle of the walls. Not sure but we kinda figure they retrofitted the inner cloister with supports as the walls were sagging. Perhaps the soil was softer than anticipated.
