Today we headed to the south coast, which is completely different from the area around Thingvellir. It’s so evocative (for me) of Iceland. The mountains rise to the north, and the land flattens out for 5km to the sea, there are these beautiful lava hills with green moss and then the flat fields that are dotted with sheep and distant farm buildings.
What we learned today is that these bluffs were the former coastline for Iceland, it has receded 5km due to isostatic rebound. The drive was stunning with peekaboo views of glaciers and the mountains once the sun came out.
We did a few stops at waterfalls and then the Skogar museum. This was a super cool look at how Icelanders used to live, with the old houses covered with sod.
