What is there to say?

Sorry for the gap in posting, there was a travel day and we had a day of staying on an island without WiFi (or power actually), but we are also heartbroken to learn that Dad/Opa/Pete was hospitalized last week after a fall, and has bleeding on the brain. He has taken a turn for the worse and is now on hospice. Mom and Dad have always been about living and Dad would not want us to cut this trip short. We are carrying him in our hearts and thoughts as we are traveling.

Let’s just call it The Shire and be done with it

On the north island there are rolling green hills, with bountiful sheep and cattle. But in the center is a most charmingly hilly and sheep laden area that was the site, twice, of Hobbiton. I know, I know, it smacks of touristy but oh my, we loved it. They dismantled the other sets in New Zealand, but the owners of the farm negotiated to keep this site. And have been maintaining the most magical place since then. You could just imagine Bilbo Baggins there. Hobbits, in case you’ve been living in a cave and don’t know, are not the size of humans. Figure 60-80% scale for these places. They live in these nifty homes in the hillside of Middle Earth. The set is meticulously detailed, and most of it is real. Real wood for the headers, real vegetables, real honey in the jars, real clothes on the laundry lines. The clothes are all scaled down to size (or children’s clothes). Each home (there are 39) has clues to what the person who lives there does (baker, cheesemaker, smith, etc)

Oh, the places we go!

Well dear readers we have only been in New Zealand a few days and already it is FABULOUS! We are staying in a lovely small house on the top of a bluff overlooking the South Pacific Ocean. Our first night here was in a gale force wind but I got these photos yesterday after we got back from the Shire. This place is called Castaways of you want to go on line and check it out.
