There once were 3 princesses who were very smart, talented and beautiful. They lived in a seaside town in Sicily which was forgotten by time and tour books. This town had old genteel grace, a town square with a church (naturally) and the wind blew a lot. They lived in a room above an old bakery and liked to walk along the promenade above the high cliffs, looking for terns, cormorants and cacti. They found an old, crumbling villa on the cliffs which was once the home of another princess from former times. That former princess was trapped there by a dragon who wouldn’t let her go free. The way dragons do. Luckily she had great views from her tower room, and was able to watch Sicilian pirate boats go by. That’s because this was before TV. And she wasn’t allowed to go to the library.
Fortunately, that crafty princess escaped and the dragon lived alone in the villa, snorting fire that scorched the draperies and generally making a mess. It’s good it finally died of old age and bad temper or the three princesses of this story would have had to vanquish it for real with clever words and their swords.
The End.
(PS, Terrasini, the town featured in this fable, makes a good starting point for the latest step in our story). We go to Palermo tomorrow.
