The Alaskans battle the elements and begin the EPIC Journey Part One

 Thursday February 29th.  Leap Year

Karen and Jim have spent the last 2 days moving snow because the Weather Gods have a weird sense of humor.  Yes we are still in February and yes we live in Alaska so what do you expect?  Except the snow we just had might set records for snowfall this time of year.  No matter. Last night we went to bed thinking the snow was behind us, only to wake up at 4:15am to see more of the stuff.  Jim got up to plow snow and I made coffee and watered house plants.

By 5:45am we were ready to begin the drive across the island.  Libby came with us to bring the truck back to Thorne Bay.  Compact snow and ice the whole way but the State plow has sanded the road well.  We made it to Hollis in 1 and a half hours and had the first of many gun inspections before getting on the Inter-Island Ferry for Ketchikan.

We still have a car ride, another ferry ride, an airplane ride, 2 car rides and 2 airplane rides before we get to New Zealand on Sunday.  Wheeeeeeee.....

Here are some photos of our morning, beginning with snow plowing and ending with our arrival at the ferry.  And it isn't even 8am yet.  More to come
