Chasing the Sun

Here we go again! Karen, Mom and I head out to Molokai. This is a short trip but if we are lucky, it may include a trip to the Kalaupapa National Historical Park, the former leper colony. Regardless, it is a small way to extend the summer a bit. And geocaches, naturally. Stay tuned for more!

Navigating the crowds

Advantage of flying with mom: the wheelchair brings you to the head of the TSA line but then we couldn’t find our boarding passes and someone whose name rhymes with ROM had a pocket knife in her bag!!! Quick lunch and raiding the Alaska lounge of snacks with Paul. Then Karen and mom deserted me to board taking all our bags and leaving me to sweet talk the ticket agent to board without ID or a boarding pass!!! But here is the best bit: mom finding out about the future and it is NOW!!

Making sugar!

Here we are sweating to death in the tropics (by choice...) and today's excursion took us out of the heat and up into the hills. Birgit already regaled you with Kalaupapa so I get to talk about Rudolph Meyers sugar mill. At the Molokai Museum and Sugar Cane mill we met Monique! She and mom became best buddies while Birgit and I hiked up the hill to the mill. Here is Monique and mom And the sugar cane mill was interesting too. It was built in the late 1800's by a guy who came here from Germany. We got to see a short video about it, that showed it I operations. Basically there was a grinder that was was kept turning by a donkey, and it squeezed the juice out of the cane. Then it went to drying pans that were heated and voila --- sugar! Here are some photos of the reconstructed mill: They also had a cool steam donkey but that photo is on my other camera so more on that later
