The Pickled Toe

This, to my mind, is a lesson in the hazards of overindulgence of alcohol.

The Sourdough Cocktail is one of the main attractions of Dawson City.  Honestly, before we even left at least 2 people asked me if I was going to have this drink.  You can find this at the Downtown Hotel.

Here is what it is:

1 oz of whiskey and 1 mummified human toe garnished with courage.

Dawson City is the only place on Earth where you can find a cocktail with a human part as an ingredient.  Here is the history:

The legend dates back to the 1920’s when rum runner Louie Linken and his brother Otto were doing a cross border delivery.  There was a blizzard, and Louie’s toe became wet in some icy water and froze while directing his dog sled team.  Fearing they were being tailed by police, the brothers continued on their journey.  Otto then performed an amputation using a woodcutting axe and overproof  rum as anesthesia.  They preserved the toe in a jar of alcohol.

After finding a frozen human toe in an abandoned cabin, Capt. Dick Stevenson decided to create a cocktail with it in 1973.  Since then, more than 10 toes have been used because (evidently) some were lost, stolen, swallowed, chewed, used up (what does that even MEAN?), etc.  In memory of those former toes, a tombstone has been erected in front of the saloon, and is updated whenever there is an ‘incident.’

People donate their toes when they are amputated due to frostbite, or other conditions.  The toe is then preserved and mummified for 6 weeks in rock salt.  To date, the club has acquired (by donation) over 25 toes.

The motto is:  "You can drink it fast, you can drink it slow, but your lips must touch the toe." You then become a club member, of which there are, get this:  100,000 members.

And did we do this? HECK NO.  There is no world in which I am kissing a muffified toe, even if I have had enough to slosh me.
