A Tight Squeeze

The railway tracks that run through the city have a unique circumstance here in Hanoi. Build by the French during their occupation in the late 19th century to transport goods and people, the city has grown up around the tracks since then. I think it is safe to say that personal and architectural boundaries are different from what is the norm in the US or Europe. An excellent example is what is euphemistically called ‘Train Street,’ where the narrow passage for the tracks has afforded the opportunity to build bars and cafes along it, the tourists naturally flocking in for the experience. One of things I really like about well thought out airports is that it is a great venue to showcase art, perhaps especially evocative of the region. I am not just referencing bronze statues of a famous person (looking at you, Johannesburg) but truly inspiring and beautiful art, which makes an otherwise trying task of lines, security and waiting much less so. Vancouver really shines in this respect. A short walk around the concourse gave me a great selection of First Nations art, in a variety of media and presentations. One of the MOST striking pieces is by Bill Reid, a world reknowed Haida artist whose piece The Spirit of Haida Gwaii: The Jade Canoe is a very large cast iron with jade patina piece near the entrance. Originally created in 1986 for the Canadian embassy in Washington DC, and on display in 1991. This one is a second (and final) casting consigned by the airport in 1993. Making sugar!

Here we are sweating to death in the tropics (by choice...) and today's excursion took us out of the heat and up into the hills. Birgit already regaled you with Kalaupapa so I get to talk about Rudolph Meyers sugar mill. At the Molokai Museum and Sugar Cane mill we met Monique! She and mom became best buddies while Birgit and I hiked up the hill to the mill. Here is Monique and mom And the sugar cane mill was interesting too. It was built in the late 1800's by a guy who came here from Germany. We got to see a short video about it, that showed it I operations. Basically there was a grinder that was was kept turning by a donkey, and it squeezed the juice out of the cane. Then it went to drying pans that were heated and voila --- sugar!
